Marine Insurance in Practice: Maritime Risks, Coverage, Claims and Emerging Exposures (Virtual Access)

Programme Highlights

Marine insurance operates within a complex environment shaped by international trade, maritime law, contractual arrangements, regulatory requirements and rapidly evolving geopolitical risks. This two-day programme provides participants with a practical introduction to the maritime industry and the principal classes of marine insurance, connecting the legal and commercial environment in which marine risks arise with the insurance solutions designed to manage them.

On Day One, participants will examine the legal and regulatory framework governing maritime activities, including key international conventions, marine insurance principles, sanctions and trade documentation. The programme will also explore the underwriting considerations associated with different goods, commodities, transportation methods, stock throughput, storage and project cargo, before introducing the principal risk factors and international market clauses applicable to Hull and Machinery insurance.

Day Two focuses on the major insurance covers relating to vessels and the wider maritime environment. Participants will develop an understanding of Protection and Indemnity insurance, charterers’ liabilities, builders’ risks, ports and terminals, mortgagees’ interests and other specialist marine liabilities. The programme will also examine the handling of Hull and P&I claims, including total and partial losses, collision, general average, salvage, subrogation and recoveries. It concludes with an overview of marine war risks, piracy, maritime terrorism and the associated underwriting considerations.

Through practical explanations and industry examples, participants will gain a broad understanding of how maritime risks are identified, underwritten and insured, and how marine claims are assessed and resolved.
