Shaping the Future of Engineering Insurance Together
On 3 September, the 2025 IMIA Singapore Conference brought together leading minds in engineering, construction, and risk in Singapore - a full day of knowledge-sharing, global perspectives, and practical insights.
Organised by the Singapore College of Insurance (SCI), and International Association of Engineering Insurers (IMIA) with the support of our partners Envista Forensics and Wotton & Kearney, the conference explored the trends and challenges shaping engineering, construction, and risk - from global forces to their impact on Asian and local markets.
Key Takeaways from the conference:
- Stephan Lämmle - Shared how IMIA is expanding its global reach with One-Day Events in new regions, the IMIA Academy and the Annual Conference. A major milestone for 2026 is the 59th Annual Conference in Singapore, (jointly organized with SCI along with the Academy in 2026 in Singapore). He highlighted emerging working groups tackling topics like AI in construction, data centre risks, biodiesel plants, and policy coverage boundaries. Stephan also encouraged contributions to industry statistics and indices to strengthen market knowledge, and reminded us that insurance cycles are real: “loss ratios track pricing cycles - you can’t outsmart the market.”
- Tim Eastham - Highlighted how sole focus on the available aerofoil fracture surfaces can be misleading in turbine failure investigations, and illustrating that a wider evaluation is often necessary from the start.
- Ben Nicholson - Warned that “off-the-shelf” policy wordings don’t always fit local realities, urging insurers to adapt design clauses carefully to avoid gaps and disputes.
- Diep Ngoc Do - Introduced the Building Resilience Index, showing how every dollar invested in resilience can save four dollars in future losses - making resilience both a safety and economic priority.
- Arnaud Meltz - Explained why low-carbon concrete is vital for sustainability, but stressed the importance of balancing innovation with reliability and safety.
- Nick Barham - Shared lessons from heritage refurbishment projects like Notre-Dame, underscoring how an understanding of conservation engineering, thorough documentation, and early expert engagement are essential for risk management.
- Bruce Swales - Pointed to the hidden risks in data centres, from fire hazards to system failures, reminding us how critical these hubs are for our digital economy.
- Matia Cazzaniga - Explored the promise of next-generation nuclear power plants and how small modular reactors could reshape clean energy while presenting new considerations for insurers.
This gathering reinforced SCI’s mission: to strengthen the knowledge base, foster global collaboration, and prepare the industry to address tomorrow’s engineering and construction risks with latest knowledge, innovation and resilience.
A huge thank you to IMIA, Brendan Dunlea, IMIA’s Asia Representative, our partners Envista Forensics and Wotton & Kearney, and all participants for making this event a success. Together, we are building a stronger future for engineering insurance worldwide.
