Programme Highlights

This intermediate-level course offers an in-depth exploration of marine insurance — focusing on the principles, practices, and claims processes that underpin this specialised field of insurance.

Delivered in person at SCI by Andrew Mackenzie, a seasoned UK-based Chartered Insurer and marine insurance expert, this programme is designed to help participants enhance their professional understanding of underwriting, claims, and policy interpretation across cargo, hull, P&I, and war risks.

Over three days, participants will engage in a blend of technical learning, practical applications, and case studies, enriched by insights from guest speakers — including a maritime lawyer, claims/loss adjusting professional, and P&I or broking expert — to provide a diversity of real-world perspectives.

An experiential visit to a maritime-related facility is also included to connect classroom theory with industry practice.

Upon completing and passing an open-book assessment at the end of the programme, participants may qualify for the SCI Certificate of Completion In Marine Insurance.

Programme Outline

Day 1 - Maritime Risks, Regulation & Trade

  • International conventions and frameworks (IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, Hague-Visby, Rotterdam Rules).
  • Marine Insurance Law and practice: insurable interest, utmost good faith, warranties, indemnity.
  • International trade environment: INCOTERMS and key trade documents.
  • Overview of global marine insurance markets and their structure.
  • Guest Speaker: Leong Lu Yuan, Director, Clasis LLC — Legal aspects of contracts of carriage and liability regimes.

Day 2 - Marine Cargo Insurance: Coverage & Claims

  • Cargo policy structures: open cover vs. single shipment.
  • Institute Cargo Clauses (A), (B), (C), and special clauses (war, strikes, commodity).
  • Cargo claims handling: process, indemnity, prevention, and recoveries.
  • Case studies: cargo loss, damage, and misdelivery scenarios.
  • Guest Speaker: Dan Yeo, Technical Director, Marine, Crawford & Company International Pte Ltd — Complex cargo claims and evidence handling.

Day 3 - Hull, P&I, and War Risks Insurance

  • Hull & Machinery Insurance: underwriting risk factors and international clause comparisons.
  • P&I Insurance: coverage, exclusions, and interactions with other marine policies.
  • Marine war and piracy insurance: evolving exposures and underwriting considerations.
  • Claims environment: collision, general average, salvage, subrogation, and recoveries.
  • Guest Speaker: P&I Club or Broking Professional — Coordinating marine and liability claims.
  • An experiential visit to a maritime - related facility is also included to connect classroom theory with industry practice.

Andrew Mackenzie, MA, FCII, is a Chartered Insurer of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and an Associate of the Association of Average Adjusters.

With over 13 years of experience in marine insurance claims within the Lloyd’s and London market, including as Head of Claims for a Lloyd’s Managing General Agent, Andrew brings deep expertise across marine hull, war, cargo, and liability classes.

He is a co-author of the CII textbooks M98: Marine Hull and Associated Liabilities and M90: Cargo and Goods in Transit Insurances, and contributes to the CII as an examiner and question writer.

Andrew is currently pursuing an Executive PhD in Actuarial Science at Bayes Business School, researching sustainability, autonomous vessels, and maritime cyber risks.

An award-winning claims professional, he has received the Insurance Insider Honours Young Claims Professional of the Year (2019) and the CII Rutter Medal (2022) for excellence in marine insurance research.

Guest Speakers

Leong Lu Yuan is a Director in the Energy, Marine and Natural Resources practice of Clasis LLC (associated with Clyde & Co). Her primary focus is shipping, international trade and marine insurance disputes, acting for insurers, P&I Clubs, shipowners, charterers, cargo interests and logistics services providers in disputes before the Singapore Courts and in local and international arbitration.

Lu Yuan is a Senior Accredited Specialist in Maritime and Shipping Law (Singapore Academy of Law), an Associate Mediator on the Maritime Panel of the Singapore Mediation Centre, and a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, and has been ranked as a Litigation Star (Singapore: Shipping) by Benchmark Litigation.

Dan Yeo is an accomplished insurance professional with over 30 years of experience across claims management, loss adjusting, underwriting, and broking in the Asia-Pacific region. Currently Technical Director (Marine) at Crawford & Co International, he leads a team managing transportation, logistics, and marine cargo losses.

He has held senior positions including Managing Director at Charles Taylor Adjusting, Head of Claims at Sompo Singapore, and Regional Marine Claims Manager at both Chubb and AIG. Legally trained with an LL.B (Hons) from the National University of Singapore, Dan is also an ACII, Chartered Insurance Practitioner, and certified WSQ ACLP trainer.

A specialist in complex Property & Casualty and Marine Liability claims, Dan is passionate about developing the next generation of claims professionals. As an active industry trainer and mentor, he continues to share his extensive experience through seminars and workshops across the region.
